Cleansing & Charging Crystals: Every Method, and Which Stones Can’t Take Water, Sun or Salt

Fifth Element |

You’ve probably heard that crystals “need cleansing”. What fewer people tell you is that some of the most popular methods can quietly ruin certain stones — a selenite wand left in water, an amethyst left on a sunny windowsill, a pyrite buried in salt.

This guide gathers every common method in one place, and then gives you the safety list. Barry, our shopkeeper, has lost exactly one stone to water in his life. He still talks about it. “Learn from my selenite,” he says.

An honest note: cleansing and charging are traditional, metaphysical practices — rituals of intention, not medicine. The care advice about water, sun and salt, however, is simple mineral physics.

Cleansing vs. charging

Cleansing is the reset — clearing what a stone has traditionally “absorbed”. Charging is the refill — renewing its energy and your intention. Most methods do a bit of both. For the five classic methods in detail, see how to cleanse & charge your crystals: 5 simple ways.

All the methods at a glance

1. Moonlight — safe for almost every stone

Leave your stones on a windowsill overnight, ideally around the full moon. Moonlight won’t fade colours, which makes it the safest “charge” there is. Check the phase on our free moon calendar.

2. Sound — safe for every stone

A few strikes of a singing bowl, tuning fork or chime next to your crystals are traditionally said to shake loose stagnant energy. Fast, works on a whole collection at once.

3. Smoke — safe for every stone

Pass each stone through the smoke of sage, palo santo or incense for a few seconds while you hold your intention. Lovely when you’re clearing a whole room at the same time.

4. Selenite or a crystal cluster — safe for every stone

Rest smaller stones on selenite, a clear quartz cluster or inside an amethyst geode overnight. Tradition holds that these stones cleanse others.

5. Breath — safe for every stone

Hold the stone close, focus on your intention and breathe out onto it in one slow breath. The quickest method there is — perfect for a stone you carry daily.

6. Visualisation — safe for every stone

Hold the crystal and imagine white light washing through it for a minute. Many people combine this with breath.

7. Earth — for hard, non-porous stones only

Burying a stone in a pot of soil overnight is a traditional grounding reset. Skip it for soft, porous or metallic stones, and mark the spot!

8. Dry brown rice — gentle and safe

Bury the stone in a bowl of dry brown rice overnight, then throw the rice away (don’t cook it). A good alternative for fragile stones.

9. Running water — with care

A short rinse under cool water suits hard, polished quartz-family stones. Dry them straight away. See the list below before you try it.

10. Sunlight — briefly, and not for coloured quartz

A short morning sunbath is a traditional charge for stones like clear quartz or tiger’s eye. Many coloured stones fade, so check the list.

The safety list: which stones to keep away from what

Keep these away from water

  • Selenite and satin spar — soft and water-soluble; they dissolve and lose their sheen.
  • Halite (rock salt) — it’s literally salt.
  • Malachite — soft and porous; don’t soak it, and don’t make “crystal water” with it.
  • Pyrite and hematite — iron minerals; they can rust.
  • Calcite, angelite, celestite, lepidolite, kyanite — soft or layered, can crack or flake.
  • Turquoise, opal and raw/porous stones — can absorb water and change colour.

Keep these out of strong sun

  • Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine, smoky quartz — their colour can fade over time.
  • Fluorite, aventurine, celestite, kunzite, aquamarine — also prone to fading.

Keep these out of salt

  • Any soft, porous or metallic stone: malachite, turquoise, opal, pyrite, hematite, selenite — salt scratches and draws in moisture.
  • Prefer salt next to the stone (in a separate bowl), not touching it.

When in doubt: use sound, smoke, moonlight, breath or selenite. They are safe for every stone.

How often?

  • When a stone arrives — always cleanse it first.
  • After heavy use — a stone you carry or work with a lot.
  • Once a month — the full moon is a natural reset for the whole collection.
  • When it feels “off” — trust your intuition.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a crystal needs cleansing?

Traditionally: when it’s new, after heavy use, or when it feels dull or “off” to you. Many people simply cleanse their whole collection once a month at the full moon.

Can I cleanse all my crystals together?

Yes, with methods that are safe for every stone — sound, smoke, moonlight, breath or selenite. Avoid group water or salt cleanses unless you’re sure every stone can take it.

Is it safe to put crystals in drinking water?

Only with care, and never with soft or toxic minerals such as malachite. The safest option is the indirect method: the stone in a sealed glass inside the water, not in it.

Does the full moon have to be exact?

No. The nights around the full moon are traditionally just as good — and any moonlit night works for a gentle charge.

How long does a cleanse take?

From a single breath to a full night. Sound and smoke take a minute; moonlight, selenite and rice are usually left overnight.
