Advanced: exact coordinates

Only needed for small villages or if the city search picks the wrong place. Use decimal degrees, negative for south and west.

Your details stay on this device. The city is only used to look up its map location and time zone.

Planet positions are calibrated against the Swiss Ephemeris and agree with professional astrology software to within one or two minutes of arc. Astrology is for reflection and fun, not a prediction or professional advice.

How this free birth chart calculator works

Your birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. Barry calculates it with real astronomy: the Sun and Moon from Jean Meeus’s lunar and solar theory, the planets from NASA JPL orbital elements corrected for light-time, nutation and aberration, and Chiron and the asteroids by numerically integrating their orbits. Everything is calibrated against the Swiss Ephemeris. Checked against professional software, positions agree to within one or two minutes of arc. There is nothing to sign up for and your details never leave your device.

How to read your birth chart in five steps

  1. Start with the Big Three. Your Sun, Moon and Rising sign give the outline of your personality.
  2. Find your chart ruler. The planet that rules your Rising sign colors your whole chart. Look at its sign and house.
  3. See where planets cluster. Houses with several planets show the areas of life that matter most to you.
  4. Read the tightest aspects first. The smaller the orb, the stronger the aspect. Aspects to the Sun, Moon and Ascendant matter most.
  5. Look at the big picture. Patterns and the element balance show the overall shape of your energy.

Why your birth time matters

The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours and the Moon moves about 13° a day, so an exact birth time makes your chart far more personal. If you don’t know it, tick “I don’t know my birth time”: Barry uses midday, still shows every planet and aspect, and leaves out the houses and Rising sign. Your birth certificate or a parent’s memory is the best place to look.

Birth chart FAQ

Is this birth chart calculator really free?

Yes. The full chart, the written reading and every table are free, with no account, email or payment. Your details are saved only in your own browser so you can come back to your chart.

What is the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?

A horoscope column is written for everyone with the same Sun sign. Your birth chart is unique to you: it uses your exact date, time and place to place all ten planets, your Rising sign and the 12 houses.

Can I get my chart without a birth time?

Yes. Without a time, Barry calculates every planet for midday. That is accurate for the slower planets, while the Moon can be up to about 7° off and occasionally in the neighboring sign. Houses and the Rising sign need a birth time, so they are left out.

What are the Big Three in astrology?

The Big Three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and Rising sign. Together they describe your core self, your emotional world and the way you meet the world.

Which house system do you use?

Placidus by default, the most popular house system in modern Western astrology. You can switch to Koch, Whole Sign, Equal, Porphyry, Regiomontanus or Campanus under your chart. At latitudes above 66°, where Placidus and Koch cannot be calculated, Barry switches to Porphyry automatically.

Is this tropical or sidereal astrology?

Tropical by default, the zodiac used in Western astrology, where 0° Aries begins at the March equinox. Choose Sidereal (Lahiri) under your chart for the zodiac used in Vedic astrology. Every chart also includes a Vedic snapshot with your nakshatra and dasha.

How accurate is this birth chart?

Very. The planets, Moon, Chiron, asteroids, nodes and Lilith are calibrated against the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard used by professional astrology software, and agree to within one or two minutes of arc for births from 1900 to 2049. House cusps are calculated exactly. The biggest source of error is usually the birth time itself, so use your birth certificate if you can.

What is Chiron in astrology?

Chiron, the wounded healer, shows where you carry an old hurt and how working through it turns you into a guide for others. Your chart includes Chiron’s sign, house, aspects and a written reading.
