Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging a space so energy — called chi — can flow freely through it. The idea is simple: the way your home is laid out shapes how it feels to be in it. Get the flow right, and a room feels calm, open, and alive. Here are the core methods, and how to bring them into your own home.
An honest note: feng shui is a traditional practice for harmony and intention, not science or medical advice. Use it as a thoughtful way to arrange a space, and keep what resonates.
1. Declutter first
Nothing in feng shui matters until this one does. Chi can’t move through clutter — stagnant piles are said to hold stagnant energy. Before you arrange anything, clear what you don’t use or love. A calm room starts with empty space.
2. Use the commanding position
Place the most important piece of furniture in each room — your bed, your desk, the main sofa — so you can see the door without being directly in line with it. This “commanding position” gives a subconscious sense of safety and control, and it’s the single most-used feng shui principle.
3. Welcome energy at the entrance
Your front door is the “mouth of chi” — where energy enters the home. Keep the entryway clear, well-lit, and inviting. A tidy doorway with a plant or a warm light sets the tone for the whole space.
4. Balance the five elements
Feng shui works with five elements, and a harmonious room holds a little of each:
- Wood — plants, natural fibres (growth)
- Fire — candles, warm light (energy)
- Earth — crystals, ceramics, stone (stability)
- Metal — brass, iron, singing bowls (clarity)
- Water — mirrors, fountains, flowing shapes (calm)
If a room feels off, it’s often missing one — add the element that’s absent.
5. Bring in living energy
Plants, natural light, and fresh air all raise the chi of a room. A healthy plant in a stagnant corner is one of the quickest feng shui fixes there is.
6. Place crystals with intention
Crystals sit naturally within feng shui as “earth” energy, and each is traditionally placed for a purpose:
- Citrine in the wealth corner (the far-left area from your front door) for abundance.
- Rose quartz in the bedroom or relationship area for love and harmony.
- Black tourmaline near the entrance for grounding and protection.
- Clear quartz anywhere that needs clarity and brighter energy.
7. Mind your mirrors
Mirrors are powerful in feng shui — they double whatever they reflect. Position them to reflect light, a plant, or a beautiful view; avoid having them reflect clutter, or face the bed or front door directly.
Start with one room
You don’t need to redo the whole house. Pick one room, declutter it, move the main piece into the commanding position, add a missing element and a plant — and feel the difference before you go further.
Your house, your energy.
