How to Smudge Your Home: Sage, Palo Santo & Cleansing

Fifth Element |

Smudging — clearing a space with cleansing smoke — is one of the oldest rituals there is. The idea is simple and lovely: when a room feels heavy, stale, or just “off,” you clear the air with sage or palo santo and reset the energy of the space.

A respectful, honest note: smudging with sage has deep roots in Indigenous traditions. Approach it with respect, source sustainably, and treat it as ritual rather than medical practice.

What you’ll need

A sage bundle or palo santo stick, something to catch ash (a bowl or shell), and a window you can open. That’s it.

How to smudge your home

  • Open a window — the smoke, and what it carries, needs somewhere to go.
  • Light the tip, let it catch, then gently blow out the flame so it smoulders.
  • Move slowly through each room, letting the smoke drift into corners and doorways.
  • Set an intention as you go — something simple like “clear and calm.”
  • Rest the bundle in your bowl and let it fully extinguish.

It’s a beautiful thing to do when you move into a new home, after a hard week, or at the turn of a season. You can cleanse your crystals in the same smoke — here’s how that works.

Your house, your energy.
