You know your Sun sign, but if its description never quite fits, the missing piece is often your Rising sign. Also called the Ascendant, it is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. Together with your Sun and Moon, it makes up the “Big Three” of astrology.
An honest note: astrology is a spiritual tradition for reflection and fun, not science or prediction. Take what resonates.
What does your Rising sign mean?
If your Sun sign is who you are at your core and your Moon sign is how you feel, your Rising sign is how you meet the world. It describes your first impression, your style, your instinctive approach to new situations and even, some say, your appearance. It is the mask you wear before people get to know you, and it often describes how you start things.
The Ascendant is also the starting point of your whole chart. It marks the beginning of the 1st house, sets up all twelve houses, and its ruling planet becomes your chart ruler, one of the most important planets in your chart.
How to find your Rising sign
Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise over the horizon in 24 hours. Each one takes roughly two hours on average, though at mid-latitudes some signs rise in under an hour and others take three. That is why you need three things to calculate it:
- your date of birth,
- your exact time of birth, and
- the city you were born in.
Enter them in Barry’s free birth chart calculator and your Rising sign appears instantly, along with your Midheaven, all 12 houses and a written reading. Your birth certificate is the best source for your time; even being 15 minutes off can change the Rising sign if you were born near the edge of one.

Sun, Moon and Rising: reading your Big Three together
Try putting your Big Three into one sentence: “I am a [Sun sign] with a [Moon sign] heart and a [Rising sign] mask.” A Capricorn Sun with a Pisces Moon and Leo Rising, for example, is ambitious and disciplined at the core, deeply sensitive inside, and warm and confident on the surface. Barry writes this sentence for you at the end of your chart.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Without a birth time you cannot know your Rising sign for certain, but you can still read your Sun, Moon (estimated for midday) and every planet in its sign. Ask a parent, look for a hospital bracelet or baby book, or request a long-form birth certificate, which often records the time. Once you have it, come back and complete your chart.
