Should I Text My Ex? An Honest Checklist

Should I Text My Ex? An Honest Checklist

Fifth Element |

Should you text your ex? Usually not if you are lonely, hurt, drunk or hoping to restart something they already ended. Possibly yes if you have a practical reason, a sincere apology with no expectations, or you have both healed and a calm, friendly message would genuinely feel fine whatever the reply. The honest test: would you be at peace if they answered coldly, or not at all?

An honest note: this is a reflective guide, not relationship or therapy advice, and every situation is different. Trust your judgement and your safety first.

Why the urge to text an ex is so strong

Breakups disrupt routines and the comfort we were used to. Late nights, anniversaries, a song in a café or seeing their story can bring a rush of longing. That urge is normal and human. It does not automatically mean you should get back together, and it does not mean you have failed at moving on. It simply means you cared.

The honest checklist

Answer each one truthfully. If most land on "wait", put the phone down for tonight.

Signs it might be okay to text

  • You have a practical reason: returning belongings, shared bills, a pet, a mutual friend's event.
  • You want to give a sincere apology and expect nothing back.
  • It has been a while, you feel calm and neutral, and a friendly hello would not unsettle you.
  • You both ended things kindly and have said you would like to stay in touch.
  • You would be okay with any reply, including no reply.

Signs to wait

  • It is late at night or you have been drinking.
  • You are hoping they will reassure you, apologise or say they miss you.
  • You just saw them with someone new.
  • They asked for no contact, or blocked you elsewhere. Respect that.
  • You are writing a long message about the relationship's problems.
  • You would check your phone every few minutes waiting for an answer.

Signs not to text at all

  • The relationship involved control, jealousy, threats or fear. Your safety and peace come first.
  • You have been in an on-again, off-again cycle that keeps hurting you. That push-pull is a pattern to break, not a sign of destiny. Our guide to karmic relationship signs explores this.

If you decide to text: what to say

Keep it short, kind and low pressure. A message that does not demand a reply is the safest kind:

  • "Hey, I still have your jacket. Want me to drop it off or post it?"
  • "I've been thinking about how I handled things at the end, and I'm sorry. No need to reply, I just wanted you to know."
  • "Saw this and thought of you. Hope you're doing well." (only if things ended on friendly terms)

Then put the phone away. Decide in advance that you will not send a second message if there is no answer.

If they don't reply (or reply coldly)

This is the moment the checklist was preparing you for. Silence is an answer too, and it is usually kinder to accept it than to keep asking. Resist the urge to follow up, explain yourself again or check whether they have read the message. Instead, take it as information: they are not in the same place you are, and that is allowed. If they reply coolly, a short "Understood, take care" closes the loop with dignity. Then spend the evening on something that is yours: a friend, a walk, a show, an early night. The ache will pass faster when you stop feeding it with screens.

If you decide not to text: what to do with the feeling

  • Write the message, but do not send it. Type it in your notes app or a journal. The feeling often softens once it is out.
  • Wait 24 hours. If you still want to send it tomorrow, in daylight, sober and calm, reconsider then.
  • Call a friend instead. Connection is usually what we really need.
  • Move your body. A walk changes the chemistry of a craving.
  • Make a small ritual. Light a candle, hold a heart stone such as rose quartz and set an intention to be gentle with yourself.

The spiritual view

In many traditions, endings make room for something truer. Tarot readers often point to the Death card as a sign of transformation, not loss. Seeing a sign or a number does not mean you must reach out; it can just as easily be a reminder to turn inward and heal. If you feel drawn to support that season, our emotional healing crystals are a gentle companion.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I wait before texting my ex?

Many people use 30 to 60 days of no contact to regain perspective. The real answer is: until you would be fine with any reply.

Should I text my ex on their birthday?

Only if you ended on good terms and a simple "Happy birthday, hope it's a good one" feels genuinely easy. If it would reopen wounds, skip it.

What if my ex texts me first?

You are allowed to take your time, reply briefly, or not reply at all. Ask yourself what you want, not just what they want.

Is wanting to text my ex a sign we are meant to be?

Not necessarily. Longing is a normal part of grief. A relationship that is right for you will be built on consistency, not on how strong the urge feels.
