The Devil is card XV of the Major Arcana and it means attachment, temptation and the patterns that keep us stuck. Upright, it points to something you feel chained to, such as a habit, a relationship, money worries or fear. Reversed, it is one of the most hopeful cards in the deck: the moment you notice the chains are loose and start to step out of them. As a yes/no card it usually reads as no, or as a warning to check your motives.
An honest note: tarot is a spiritual tradition for reflection and storytelling, not fact or prediction. Read it as a mirror, not a map.

The Devil symbolism
A horned, bat-winged figure crouches on a dark pedestal, an inverted pentagram above his brow and a lowered torch in one hand. Chained to the pedestal stand a naked man and woman, now with small horns and tails of their own. They mirror the couple on The Lovers card, but where The Lovers stand in open light, these two stand in shadow, bound to something that does not care for them.
The most important detail is easy to miss: the chains around their necks are loose. Either of them could lift the loop over their head and walk away. That is the whole teaching of The Devil. The power that holds us is often one we have agreed to, out of fear, comfort or habit, and what we agreed to, we can also undo.
The Devil upright meaning
Upright, The Devil shines a light on whatever has a grip on you. It might be obvious, like a compulsion, debt or a relationship you know is unhealthy. It might be subtler: perfectionism, people-pleasing, a story about yourself that you keep living out because it is familiar.
The card is not a judgement and it is not about evil. It is about honesty. It asks what you get from staying where you are, and what it costs you. Pleasure and ambition are not bad in themselves; The Devil only shows up when they start running the show. Naming the chain is the first step to loosening it.
The Devil reversed meaning
Reversed, The Devil often marks a turning point. You are seeing the pattern clearly, perhaps for the first time, and starting to reclaim your energy. It can describe quitting a habit, leaving a draining job or relationship, or simply saying no where you used to say yes.
Occasionally the reversal points to the shadow going underground rather than away: hiding a behaviour instead of facing it, or swapping one attachment for another. Read it alongside the cards around it. Most of the time, though, The Devil reversed is good news. The door was never locked.
The Devil in love
If you are single
For single readers, The Devil can describe intense attraction that is more about chemistry than compatibility, or a pull back towards an ex you know is not good for you. It asks you to notice whether you are choosing freely or being driven by loneliness.
If you are in a relationship
In a relationship, The Devil can show passion and strong physical connection, but also codependency, jealousy, control or staying together out of fear. If it appears, look honestly at whether you both still feel free inside the relationship.
Reversed in love
Reversed in love, it often means breaking a toxic cycle, ending a situationship, or a couple choosing to work through unhealthy patterns together. It is a card of reclaiming yourself.
The Devil in career and money
At work, The Devil can describe golden handcuffs: a well-paid job that drains your soul, workaholism, or a culture that rewards cutting corners. With money it warns of debt, impulse spending and the feeling that you can never have enough. Reversed, it suggests getting out from under a financial burden or finally leaving a role that has been holding you hostage.
The Devil as feelings
As feelings, The Devil describes strong desire, obsession or a pull the person cannot quite explain. It is intense and physical, sometimes possessive. It does not always mean they want something healthy or lasting.
Is The Devil a yes or no card?
The Devil is usually read as a no, or as a yes that comes with strings attached. If you are asking whether to go after something, the card wants you to check whether you are being led by fear, ego or craving.
What to do when you pull The Devil
- Write down one thing you feel you cannot live without, and one way it limits you.
- Choose a small act of freedom: a day off a habit, an honest boundary, or a bill you finally face.
- If a pattern feels too heavy to carry alone, reach out to a friend or a professional. Asking for help is a loosening of the chain, not a failure.
Crystal pairing: Black tourmaline, a grounding, protective stone for clearing heavy energy and holding firm boundaries.
The Devil in the Major Arcana journey
The Major Arcana tell the story of a journey, and each card makes most sense next to its neighbours.
- Temperance, card XIV, is balance; The Devil is what happens when balance tips into excess.
- The Lovers is The Devil’s mirror image, the same couple standing in freedom and choice.
