Eclipses 2027: Dates, Signs and the Great Total Eclipse of August 2

Eclipses 2027: Dates, Signs and the Great Total Eclipse of August 2

Fifth Element |

There are five eclipses in 2027: an annular solar eclipse in Aquarius on 6 February, penumbral lunar eclipses on 20 February (Virgo), 18 July (Capricorn) and 17 August (Aquarius), and a total solar eclipse in Leo on 2 August. The August eclipse is one of the longest of the century, with around six minutes of totality near Luxor, Egypt. Astrologically, the main story is the Leo/Aquarius axis: heart vs. community, self-expression vs. belonging.

An honest note: eclipses are real and beautiful astronomy. Their astrological meaning is a spiritual tradition for reflection, not fact or prediction.

About the times: times are for greatest eclipse, in UTC and US Eastern time (EST, UTC−5, until 14 March, then EDT, UTC−4, until 7 November). Depending on where you are, the date can fall a day earlier or later. Local viewing times depend on your exact location, so check a local eclipse map before you go out.

The great total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027

This is the big one. The Moon's shadow sweeps across the Atlantic and makes landfall in southern Spain and Gibraltar, then crosses North Africa (including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya) and Egypt, where the area around Luxor gets roughly six minutes of totality, close to the longest anywhere on the path. It then continues over the Red Sea into Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Outside the narrow path of totality, a partial eclipse is visible across a much wider area of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. It is not visible from the Americas.

Totality is when the Moon covers the Sun completely: the sky darkens, the temperature drops and the Sun's corona appears. If you've ever wanted to travel for an eclipse, this one is worth planning early, because hotels along the path are expected to fill up.

The annular eclipse of 6 February 2027

An annular eclipse happens when the Moon is slightly too far from Earth to cover the Sun fully, which leaves a bright "ring of fire". The path runs across South America (Chile and Argentina), over the Atlantic and on to West Africa. Areas either side of the path see a partial eclipse.

How to watch a solar eclipse safely

Never look directly at the Sun, not even when most of it is covered, and not through sunglasses. Eye damage can happen without pain.

  • Use certified solar eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) from a reputable supplier, or a handheld solar viewer. Check them for scratches first.
  • Never look through a camera, phone, binoculars or telescope unless it has a proper solar filter on the front. The concentrated light can injure your eyes even while you wear eclipse glasses.
  • A pinhole projector (a card with a small hole that projects the Sun onto paper) is a safe, free option for children.
  • During the annular eclipse, and during any partial phase, keep your glasses on the whole time. Only inside the path of totality on 2 August, during the brief minutes of total eclipse, is it safe to look without them. Put them back on as soon as the first bright edge of the Sun returns.
  • Lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch with the naked eye. The 2027 penumbral eclipses are subtle, though, and appear only as a faint dimming.

What the 2027 eclipses mean astrologically

The Leo/Aquarius axis

Three of the five eclipses (6 February, 2 August and 17 August) fall on the Leo/Aquarius axis. Leo is the heart: creativity, romance, children, pride, joy and being seen. Aquarius is the collective: friends, community, technology, ideals and the future. Eclipses on this axis are often read as asking how you balance your personal spark with the groups you belong to, and whether you're shining as yourself or performing for an audience.

2 August: total solar eclipse in Leo

A new moon in Leo, made extra-strong by totality. Traditionally it's a fresh start around confidence, creative projects, love and self-expression. Look at which house of your chart holds about 10° Leo to see where that new chapter might open.

6 February and 17 August: Aquarius eclipses

The February annular eclipse opens a story around friendships, networks and future goals, and the 17 August lunar eclipse brings it to a head two weeks after the Leo total eclipse. Endings and clarity around groups, online life and what you stand for are common themes.

20 February (Virgo) and 18 July (Capricorn)

The Virgo lunar eclipse highlights health, work routines and daily habits. The Capricorn lunar eclipse highlights career, responsibility and long-term structure. Both are penumbral, so think quiet adjustments rather than dramatic turning points.

How to work with eclipse energy

  • Observe, don't force. Many astrologers advise against big rituals at eclipses. Journal what comes up instead.
  • Look back six months. Eclipse themes often echo across the two seasons in a year.
  • Use the moon calendars. Both solar eclipses fall on new moons and all three lunar eclipses fall on full moons. See the New Moon Calendar 2027 and Full Moon Calendar 2027.
  • Ground yourself. A protective stone from our protection crystals is a popular companion for eclipse season.
