The root chakra is where the whole system begins — your foundation of safety, stability, and belonging. When it feels steady, everything above it has something to stand on. Here’s what the root chakra means, the stones traditionally used to balance it, and a simple way to work with it.
An honest note: chakras and crystals are a spiritual and metaphysical tradition, not medicine. Nothing here is a health claim — it’s meaning and ritual.
What is the root chakra?
Known in Sanskrit as Muladhara (“root support”), the root chakra sits at the base of the spine. Its colour is red and its element is earth. It governs your sense of security, groundedness, and basic trust in life.
Balanced vs. blocked
In the tradition, a balanced root chakra is described as feeling safe, grounded, and settled — present in your body and steady on your feet. When it’s out of balance, people describe feeling anxious, ungrounded, restless, or preoccupied with security. These are energetic descriptions, not diagnoses.
Crystals for the root chakra
- Red jasper — steady stamina and grounding.
- Black tourmaline — protection and a settled base.
- Hematite — heavy, anchoring, back-to-earth.
- Garnet — warmth and vitality at the root.
How to work with it
Sit comfortably and place a grounding stone at the base of your spine or between your feet. Picture a warm red glow there, breathe slowly, and silently affirm: “I am safe. I am grounded. I belong.” Walking barefoot on the earth is a lovely, simple root practice too.
Your house, your energy.
