Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027: 9 February to 3 March (Pisces back into Aquarius), 10 June to 4 July (Cancer back into Gemini) and 7 October to 28 October (Scorpio back into Libra). Each period starts in a water sign and slides back into an air sign. That gives the year a theme of feelings vs. logic, and of saying what you actually mean.
An honest note: Mercury retrograde is an optical effect. Mercury only appears to move backwards from Earth. Its astrological meaning is a tradition for reflection, not fact or prediction. Nothing has to go wrong.

- Retrograde 1: stations retrograde 9 Feb (about 19:00 UTC / 2 pm ET) at 6° Pisces. It re-enters Aquarius on 18 Feb and stations direct 3 Mar (about 14:00 UTC / 9 am ET) at 21° Aquarius.
- Retrograde 2: stations retrograde 10 Jun (about 19:00 UTC / 3 pm ET) at 6° Cancer. It re-enters Gemini on 26 Jun and stations direct 4 Jul (about 21:00 UTC / 5 pm ET) at 27° Gemini.
- Retrograde 3: stations retrograde 7 Oct (about 16:00 UTC / noon ET) at 5° Scorpio. It re-enters Libra on 16 Oct and stations direct 28 Oct (about 15:00 UTC / 11 am ET) at 19° Libra.
The shadow periods: astrologers also watch the "pre-shadow" and "post-shadow", when Mercury covers the same stretch of sky before and after the retrograde. As a rough guide, allow roughly two weeks either side of each retrograde. Exact shadow dates vary by a few days depending on how they're calculated. Mercury finally leaves the retrograde zone when it returns to Pisces (18 Mar), Cancer (12 Jul) and Scorpio (10 Nov; 9 Nov in the US).

9 February to 3 March: Pisces to Aquarius
Pisces blurs the lines, so messages can get lost in translation, dates confused and details missed. Once Mercury slips back into Aquarius, the focus shifts to friendships, group chats, online life and technology. Mars is also retrograde at this time (10 January to 1 April), so the first quarter of the year is a natural season for review rather than racing ahead. Good for: reconnecting with old friends, finishing creative projects, updating devices and backups.
10 June to 4 July: Cancer to Gemini
Cancer brings home, family and memory into focus. Old family conversations may resurface, and emotions can run ahead of the words. 7 October to 28 October: Scorpio to Libra
Scorpio digs for truth: secrets, shared money, trust and intimacy. When Mercury moves back into Libra, the spotlight turns to partnerships, negotiations and fairness. Old relationship conversations, or an ex, may come back for a second look. Good for: honest talks, renegotiating agreements, reviewing joint finances. It ends the day before the Scorpio new moon on 29 October.

- Back up first. Phone, laptop, important files. It's sensible any time, and retrograde is a good reminder.
- Read before you sign. You don't have to avoid contracts, but double-check the details, dates and small print.
- Leave buffer time for travel. Confirm bookings, check the terminal and pack chargers.
- Say it twice. Repeat key information in writing after a call. Clarity prevents most retrograde "chaos".
- Use the "re-" words. Review, revise, reconnect, repair, rest. Retrograde favours finishing over starting.
- Pause before you text the ex. If old flames reappear (especially in October), sleep on it before replying.
